To be fair, the world is an evil place; ugly, brutish, everything they say. And that's why we need "Good" heroes, genuinely good, to look up to and aspire to be. The world will never be a better place if we keep looking up to and aspiring to be assholes.

I think people would rather watch characters that make them feel good about themselves than be forced to consider their own goodness through the lens of an ideal. It reminds me of the classic homer/Flanders dichotomy. Homer hates Flanders because he makes him feel worse about himself. Ideally, he'd recognize Flanders good qualities, imitate them, to a degree and become a better person overall. Since Homer is comedically immature, he does none of this and decides to hate on a good guy. This Is exactly what these cynical writers and viewers do when they produce and defend this kind of storytelling.

My brother in Christ, it feels you’re so close to the heart of the problem here- but you somehow miss it Those SPECIFIC set of values that your heart yearns for are far too lofty to be powered by INDIVIDUALISM alone. Individualism is too fragile to be the north star of a culture and it is partially why we are even here in the first place as a culture You need a more potent external anchor for your morality- you may say that you don’t right now and that’s okay, but I promise you- further events you will see in your life will overwhelmingly point you to this thing I just said Run away from it It wil come back and find you Find God- find the Christian God- that’s is what your heart is really really looking for tbh

I like all sorts of characters but I agree that straight up good characters are becoming way less frequent. My issue honestly is that the morally grey characters are treated as good characters when they aren't. To me, it seems like the writers morality is screwed up. We can root for morally grey characters but don't pretend they are just right and good through and through.

If Capitalism works, then why have we been giving money to the worst people in society? Hollywood has been depraved for a while, its just been more subtle. They glorified all kinds of immorality, like violence, materialism, cheating, promiscuity, to sexualizing children. The ones with good lessons were the exception.

Wow, 2yrs late to watching this but I’ve been saying it for 5, you broke it down soo well. The whole anti-hero thing was edgy and new, but we forgot to let it run its course or turn it off and it perfectly coincided with how more self centred the world has become, due to exhausting, uneven socio-economic issues, lots of people are “bad” primarily due to circumstance yet they can’t even reflect on themselves and their actions coz you can’t stop in this current world, you’ll fall behind

Soylent Green is an allegory, and it should be considered as such. Taking what it says at face value is a great way to be left confused about the message it makes: Soylent Green isn’t a warning about overpopulation, it’s about how blissful ignorance leads to dark realities that can and should be avoided not by avoiding it, but facing the monster head on. It tells us to read about the horrific acts in our past, address issues that plague our present, and avoid an awful fate in the future. If we try to “cull” the population, all that will come from our shortsighted efforts is the lack of manpower and minds to fix things today. We’re on a sinking ship that desperately needs repair, yet some people will say the solution is to throw people overboard instead? Here’s a better solution: have them help plug the leaks and fetch spare timber and glue instead!! Soylent Green shows us that the world is bad, but Sol shows us that it doesn’t have to be, because it wasn’t always that way, and the movie ends with an optimistic call to action: that we shouldn’t have to put up with the way things are, and that we should push for a better future.

I have taken a crack at writing a series of novels, (halfway through book two while I’m editing book one and looking for representation) and my goal is to write good characters that are also morally good. In fact, doing good is so crucial to the storyline that when they step out of line and do something morally wrong, they falter and fail. They aren’t always good, but they can only win by being good. Stories should inspire hope, not sadness.

Who decides what is good. I disagree with the notion that wanting freedom at all costs is what makes someone moral. If this were true the only good society would be anarchy with no rules to oppress anyone. Society is a balance between freedom and safety but that doesn’t make it evil. There is no list of things that are moral under every circumstance. A good example is v for vendetta, is terrorism to overthrow a fascist government good or evil it depends on who you ask. If it’s good then what about other terrorists who fight for something you oppose, are they good. Should you not harm innocent people at all cost even to save the world, there’s a reason why the trolly problem and other moral dilemmas exist, it’s because there’s no clear answer. In my opinion a good person is someone who does what they think is right even when it’s difficult.

9:30 I am sorry but you can't make a point for good and evil without God. Logically impossible. There is no objective good or bad without a prime ultimate moral law giver which you can reference. The ultimate good, which you reference and compare any moral judgement to, has its origin in what is commonly referred to as 'God'. Without rooting it in God, everything becomes a matter of subjective opinion, which is precisely the reason why people are confused about good and evil, try to reframe bad characters as heroes etc. Trying to justify or even define "good" without acknowledging that it is rooted in an objective standard is mute. You can't make any of the moral statements which you made afterwards, like: "So what defines good and bad in people is largely the degree to which someone exemplifies these ideals in their personal lives.." What exactly are you even saying? Exemplifies WHAT? Without God, 'good' is just an undefined, hollow term, subject to opinion. You're using circular reasoning because in a Godless worldview, everything is subjective and therefore arbitrary. And we know where that leads to. To say that something deemed 'good' is based on the common subjective consensus of the people is exactly how you arrive at something like the Holocaust. You made a video about morality being dead and don't even offer the correct counter solution to it. When you say you don't believe in a higher power, you lose all credibility because you can't account for anything you say after. The keyword being 'account for'.

I have been thinking about the same issue for a while now, I am glad you have brought it up! It was interesting to hear your thoughts on the matter, and I agree with many of the thinks you said. A thing I thought of while watching your video is that that when people say they want to see lmorally bad” characters, often what they are really looking for is a character that is not exceptionally virtuous and heroic, but more “relatable” and “gray”. However, I think that does not necessarily mean these characters should be “bad”. It would be interesting to see more characters who are flawed, but ultimately fall on the “good side”. We see many characters like that in literature, one of my favoruite example is Grushenka from The Brothers Karamazov. We get to know her reputation is a heartless and selfish person, and when we first see her, she shows some malicious characteristics, but as the story progresses, we see her act compassionately towards other characters, do the right thing in several situations, look for a moral redemption and constantly trying to overcome her flaws. The bad things she did were motivated by very relatable flaws, as were the good. Despite all her flaws, she had genuine compassion towards others. I think it would be good to see more characters like that in cinema. There are a few examples I can think of, like Boromir from the Lord of the Rings. Also, paradoxically, often the characters who are more like everyday people in their morality are less liked by audiences (like Sansa and to some extent Theon in Game of Thrones). I just thought to share this little thought I had. If someone reads this, have a good day!😊
